As an update to the executive order issued last Friday that imposed travel bans on foreign nationals from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued a statement confirming that Lawful Permanent Residents (green card holders) may be allowed admission into the U.S. The statement explained that the admission into the U.S. is not guaranteed, but that “absent the receipt of significant derogatory information indicating a serious threat to public safety and welfare, lawful permanent resident status will be a dispositive factor in our case-by-case determinations.”

This DHS statement helps to clarify those that may be impacted by the travel ban, however the situation remains fluid. Non-U.S. citizens with ties to the affected countries should consult qualified immigration counsel for the latest information to evaluate international travel before departing the United States. Additionally, because the Trump administration has indicated that additional countries may be added to the executive order, foreign nationals from other countries should also review the latest updates before departing the United States and contact qualified immigration counsel before making international travel plans.
