On July 7, 2025, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Honduras and Nicaragua. The termination will be effective September 8, 2025, 60 days after the publication of the Federal Register notices.
Many Honduran and Nicaraguan TPS EAD holders will remain work authorized until the September 8, 2025, effective date. However, employers will need to reverify employment eligibility for affected individuals pursuant to the instructions provided in the Federal Register notices for Honduras and Nicaragua.
The Secretary of Homeland Security determines whether a country continues to meet the conditions for TPS designation before the current TPS designation expires. In this case, Secretary Kristi Noem determined that Honduras and Nicaragua no longer meet the statutory requirements for TPS because of improved country conditions.
Honduras and Nicaragua were both designated for TPS in 1999. The termination of TPS will affect approximately 72,000 people from Honduras and 4,000 people from Nicaragua.
Employers and their employees are encouraged to review potential impacts of the TPS termination and should consult with an immigration attorney regarding gaps in employment authorization and potential options to remain in the United States.
