DOS Reduces the Validity of Visas for Many Countries

30 Jul

The Department of State (DOS) announced updates to its reciprocal nonimmigrant visa policy that significantly reduce the validity period for nonimmigrant visas for more than 50 countries. The changes impact citizens of China, Nigeria, Venezuela, and other countries primarily throughout Africa and Asia.

Generally, the changes to DOS’s Visa Reciprocity Schedules affect the B (temporary visitor), F (student), H (specialty occupation worker), J (exchange visitor), M (vocational student), and O (extraordinary ability) visa classifications. With some exceptions, foreign nationals from affected countries will now be issued visas with a validity period of only three months and for a single entry.

Visas that had been issued prior to the reciprocity changes should not be affected and should retain their validity as issued. For individuals with multiple citizenships, the reciprocity schedule is determined by the passport used for the visa application.

As a reminder, President Trump signed a proclamation on June 4, 2025 that fully restricts nationals of 12 countries from entering the United States and partially restricts those from seven other countries. Notwithstanding changes to the Visa Reciprocity Schedules, individuals affected by the travel ban may still have to qualify for a waiver in order to be issued a visa.
