Obtaining an ADIT Stamp as Temporary Proof of Green Card Status

22 Aug

In some instances, lawful permanent residents (green card holders) may need proof of their status in the form of an ADIT stamp (Alien Documentation, Identification, and Telecommunication), which is a temporary I-551 stamp typically affixed to a passport or an I-94 card that serves as evidence of lawful permanent resident status.

The ADIT stamp allows the holder to travel internationally and re-enter the United States, work legally, and enjoy other benefits of permanent residency while awaiting the official permanent resident card (“green card”). The ADIT stamp may be issued if an individual loses his or her green card or has the following applications pending: Form I-90 (Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card), Form I-751 (Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence), or Form N-400 (Application for Naturalization).

Previously, the individual’s only option to secure an ADIT stamp was to appear in person at a local U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) field office to have the ADIT stamp physically placed in their passport. Now there is an option to receive the temporary evidence of green card status by mail rather than having to physically visit a field office. An individual may now obtain the ADIT stamp by calling the USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283 in the United States or 212-620-3418 while abroad.  USCIS will verify the lawful permanent resident’s identity, mailing address, and ability to receive UPS or FedEx express mail.

The officer will determine whether it is necessary to schedule an in-person appointment or if an ADIT stamp can be issued by mail.  If granted by mail, the applicant will receive a Form I-94 with an ADIT stamp, DHS seal, and a printed photo of the individual from the USCIS database.

Despite recent USCIS policy changes that have reduced the need for ADIT stamps, there are still some situations where obtaining one is necessary, and the convenience of receiving it by mail is a welcomed development.
