South Sudan’s TPS Designation Has Been Automatically Extended

7 May

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced in a Federal Register notice published on May 6, 2025, that the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for South Sudan has been extended for 6 months from May 4, 2025, through November 3, 2025. In addition, the validity of Employment Authorization Documents (EAD) that were previously issued under the TPS designation for South Sudan has also been automatically extended for six months.

Under the statute, the Secretary of Homeland Security must determine whether a country continues to meet the conditions for TPS designation at least 60 days before the current TPS designation expires, or else the period of designation is automatically extended for six months. In this case, Secretary Kristi Noem did not make a determination on South Sudan’s designation by the March 4, 2025, statutory deadline due to the lack of an updated analysis of current country conditions from the Department of State for South Sudan.
