Update on U.S. Student Visa Interviews and Enhanced Screening Procedures

20 Jun

The U.S. Department of State has announced the resumption of student visa appointments, reversing the previous pause in interviews. However, with this resumption comes a directive for increased scrutiny of F, M, and J nonimmigrant visa applicants.

Pursuant to the Announcement of Expanded Screening and Vetting for Visa Applications issued on June 18, 2025, U.S. embassies and consulates have been instructed to thoroughly vet applicants for any indications of “hostile attitudes toward U.S. citizens, culture, government, institutions, or founding principles.” As part of this enhanced vetting process, consular officers will review applicants’ entire online presence.

Applicants may be asked to make their social media profiles publicly viewable. The State Department’s announcement indicates that “limited access to, or visibility of, online presence could be construed as an effort to evade or hide certain activity.”

If you or someone you know may be affected by this expanded screening process, we encourage you to contact our office to discuss your legal options and next steps. Immigration policies and procedures are evolving rapidly. Foster LLP will continue to monitor these developments and provide updates through our website at www.fosterglobal.com.
