Visa Applications for China Transition to New Online Platform

26 Sep

Starting September 30, 2025, Chinese consular posts in the United States will transition to a new online visa application platform (China Online Application System). This follows a steady rollout of the platform throughout 2025, and the United States will join Canada, Spain, Japan, and Australia in using the online platform. The launch of this new system is part of China’s continued efforts to boost tourist travel after the pandemic.

Previous Visa Application Procedure

Before the online system, Chinese visa applications required in-person submission in two phases. The first phase required original application documents to be submitted by the applicant or authorized visa agent. The second phase required another visit to the consulate to collect the passport and visa stamp. If required, the applicant also submitted biometrics and attended an interview in the second phase.

New Application Procedure

Applicants must now complete the first phase online. All application documents will be submitted through the online platform for initial review. The consular post will contact the applicant directly regarding any revisions or questions. Then, the applicant’s original passport must be submitted for visa stamping.

If fingerprints are required, applicants must submit their passports in person unless they are exempt. Otherwise, the consulate may provide instructions for shipping the passport, or a visa agent may be used.

Currently, Chinese (M) business visa applications are generally exempt from the fingerprint requirement. However, this will vary on a case-by-case basis, and business travelers to China are encouraged to consult with their immigration provider to ensure all necessary procedures are followed. China is expected to further extend or revise the fingerprint exemption for this visa category by December 31, 2025.
